Exploring AI in El Salvador: Highlights from the First AI Tinkerers Meetup

Written by | Sep 3, 2025

This past Saturday, El Salvador had its first AI Tinkerers meetup at San Vicente Sur. The event, sponsored by AgilityFeat and WebRTC.ventures, featured engaging talks on AI’s impact on software development, impressive technical demos, and discussions on how both tech and non-tech industries can benefit from AI adoption.

Here are some highlights from the First AI Tinkerers Meetup in El Salvador.

The Impact of AI on Software Development

The meetup started with an interesting talk by Pedro Ruiz, representing WebRTC.ventures. Pedro spoke about the impact of AI technologies in the software development process.

Pedro pointed out how AI is a great tool to accelerate the development process. It enables developers to focus on the parts of the process that they’re passionate about, while removing overhead on tasks that are typically considered an afterthought: automated tests, thorough technical documentation, collaboration tools (observability, alerts, etc).

For leadership roles, such as POs, SMs or PMs, Pedro introduced AI as a powerful tool to make communication between stakeholders and engineers easier. By being able to put together quick UI mockups or even code (with vibe coding), leaders can easily transmit business requirements to developers and refine scope of product increments or changes.

Finally, he really emphasized that software is still developed by humans, and that  friction in human communication will always exist. Thus, the role for leaders is not to expect just a quicker and broader outcome from engineers using AI, but rather to amplify collaboration and communication within all people involved in software development. There’s a great post on the WebRTC.ventures blog about this: How AI Development Tools Are Transforming Our Software Engineering Process.

AI for Everyone

Next, Rafael Amberths from AgilityFeat presented on the adoption of AI technologies beyond the traditional tech sector, highlighting practical, real-world implementations. He presented a case study of a small enterprise specializing in concrete crafts that integrated an AI-powered chatbot with advanced natural language understanding (NLU) into their social media platforms to manage initial customer interactions and automate lead qualification.

Rafael gave us a concise technical overview of AI Agents, explaining their architecture, capabilities, and potential applications. He encouraged audience participation, which sparked an interesting discussion. A non-developer shared her experience creating a voice AI agent for a local type restaurant using ElevenLabs.

Rafael encouraged everyone, regardless of technical background, to experiment with AI to streamline operations, enhance customer experiences, and uncover new business opportunities. His session left a clear message: AI can empower anyone to innovate and improve everyday workflows

Community Demos

Of course, an AI Tinkerers event would be incomplete without the participation of attendees demoing their AI tinkering. The initial meetup had three impressive demos of Salvadoran talent.

Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG)

Fredy Rivera, a first year student from Universidad de El Salvador, presents on Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG)

Fredy Rivera, a first year student from Universidad de El Salvador, presented a production‑ready abstraction for Retrieval‑Augmented Generation (RAG), covering embeddings, core architecture, integration of preferred models, performance, and a live demo with code.

AI Code Scanner

Elias Velasco presented an AI-driven Code Scanner

Elias Velasco presented an AI-driven tool that scans GitHub repositories locally, highlights code improvements, best practices, and potential vulnerabilities, preparing for open‑source release.

Flutter Chatbot

José Arias shows us a Flutter Chatbot

Last but not least, José Arias from ACODJAR de R.L., shared his experience building a Flutter app that calls the OpenAI API and uses a custom‑trained model to generate conversational responses in authentic Salvadoran street slang. He explained how he leveraged AI for writing the code for the app and also for configuring the model that the app interacts with.

Looking Forward

The first AI Tinkerers meeting in El Salvador revealed strong interest in applying AI across many areas of the country, along with a shared excitement for new ideas. Talks covered a wide range of topics, from building software with AI to applying it in non-tech industries, and the community shared some impressive demos.

This event created a space for both experienced professionals and newcomers to learn, collaborate, and help grow AI adoption in El Salvador. We look forward to future gatherings that will continue exploring AI’s potential and supporting people and businesses in embracing its transformative power.
