Crowdfunding in Boston

Startups

This post is part of my ongoing “BizDev Travels” series.

Boston, Massachusetts – July 26 2012

The final stop of my day on Thursday was to a meetup for crowdfunding.  This was billed as the first ever in person crowd funding event in the area, and it was definitely interesting.  It was organized by Johan from FindBoomer, which is dedicated to creating events like this to help fund startups.

The meetup involved a brief talk via skype by the founder of Rock the Post, a crowd funding platform.  After that everyone was invited to meet the startups in the room, and talk to them about their ideas and potential advice or connections they could provide.

Although I wasn’t able to stay until the end for the actual crowd funding part, I left a small cash donation towards the winner for the evening.

It was a relatively small event, with as many entrepreneurs as regular attendees, but that’s to be expected when you try something for the first time.  There were definitely some mentors available in the audience with legal, marketing, or software advice to share.  And I met a couple of interesting companies that I hope to continue conversations with.  I would definitely check it out again the next time I am in the area.
